Older houses tend to have some hidden surprises. You really do not know what you are in for until you actually get into the walls. Prime example, our home we bought in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We wanted to remove the wall separating the kitchen from the family room, however, we were not certain whether or not it was load bearing. Unfortunately, there was a support column in this wall complicating our plans significantly. We both agreed neither of us could live with the support column smack dab in the middle of the kitchen and living room. Kevin Parr drew out a plan with a support beam, hired a structural engineer to approve his plan and we now have our open concept kitchen-family room!!!!
